Computational Art – Animated Music

I recently stumbled upon the craft of animating a musical score using software and musical expertise combined. Someone very active in this field is Stephen Malinowski who’s been experimenting and exploring this idea for some years.

Here is Stephen’s Youtube page – I won’t attempt to describe what he creates other than to stress it is not trivial and is absolutely fascinating to watch, particularly for a piece of music with which one is familiar; its vaguely reminiscent of scenes found in Disney’s Fantasia but the sophistication and attention to detail is astonishing.

I suspect that anyone interested in musicology and computing will find these both stimulating and relaxing, here are two of my favorites:
