Computational Art – Mandelbox

I recall once writing a small program on a Sinclair QL which drew an image of the Mandelbrot set on the screen, I was amazed at how a simple looking recursive function could possibly lead to such an incredibly complicated looking pattern.

Well things have advanced in leaps and bounds since I wrote that simple program – today the power of modern microprocessors coupled with GPU laden video cards, fast hardware floating point mathematics and powerful programming languages has led to some visually stunning images and video.

Two buzzwords you’ll encounter if you look into this are “mandelbox” and “mandelbulb” each of these are in some ways an extension of ideas like the Mandelbrot Set into a greater number of dimensions so we can see 3D renderings of recursive mathematical structures.
